“It’s prettier than I remember,” Noah says, looking out across the town from the highest point on the hill.

I shrug. “It’s okay. It’s just town, though.”

“To you it is. You’ve been here all this time.”

“That makes it sound as though I’m sad or something. Like I haven't made my escape.”

“I didn't mean it like that. I meant that I’ve seen so much, walked around so many huge cities. It’s a beautiful world out there but there’s no place like home.”

I snicker. “Alright, Dorothy, if you love it so much then why don’t you stay?”

He smiles at me. “Would you like it if I did?”

I study him for a beat and then force my eyes away from him, feeling heat rise in my cheeks. “Whatever.” Picking up a small stone, I launch it and watch it fall out of view. “I’ll tell you something though…” I pick up another stone and throw it even further. “As soon as I’ve graduated I’m out of here.”

“Wouldn't you miss your brother?”

“He’ll be fine. That’s obvious, seeing that he’s all loved up with some nameless girl.”

“You don’t fancy the idea of helping him out with his business?”

“I love him and all…god, that sounds so mushy…but I need to start my life. We’ll always be close.”

“Fancy starting this new life of yours in London?”

My eyes fix on him.

Is he suggesting that I follow him to England?

He grins. “Just a thought.”

I blow out. “Okay, so where do you want to go now?”

“Is that diner by the bookstore still open? You know, the one that sells hot fudge sundaes with crazy straws?”

“That place will always be open. Long after we’re all dead and buried.”

“Then I’m craving some ice cream and hot fudge sauce. My treat…you in?”

“Okay. Sure.”

As Noah leads the way my eyes train on him. Today has been awesome, just chatting shit and walking around town. It feels good to be with him enjoying such a simple thing like walking. It almost feels like we could be a couple. But that only makes me sad. If he’s teasing me again, like he did three long years ago, then I don’t think I could forgive him.

If only he knew how I felt.

In the quieter moments of today I’ve tried to contact Jo by text. I really need my best friend’s advice. Do I throw caution to the wind and make a move on him? Or would I only be setting myself up for more pain and confusion?

She hasn't replied yet. Probably too busy with her new man.

“Come on,” Noah shouts, running down the steep rocky hill. “I’ll race you like we used to back in the day.”

“That’s when we were kids,” I shout back, really not in the mood to feel all my jiggly bits wobble and shake.

“We’re still young!” He then really takes off.

I shake myself free of thoughts, take a deep breath, and then charge down the hill after him. With the wind sailing through my hair I feel free again—a first in so very long.
